Recently FUSE Caribbean started a collaboration with the employment program of the Curaçao Centre for Correction and Detention (SDKK – Sentro di Detenshon i Korekshon Kòrsou ). Our Ekoduro furniture is manufactured in collaboration with SDKK to give inmates opportunities for work and skills development which are essential to rebuild their lives.
Natascha Pieter, unit head Correction at SDKK, shared with us their motivation for working together with FUSE.
“Our collaboration with FUSE Caribbean is about innovation and opportunities. Clients at SDKK are learning new techniques for the use of recycled materials and at the same time we give back to our community by supporting recycling and making people aware of how to act differently with plastic waste on our beautiful island.
We have highly skilled workers at SDKK who are specialized in for example confection, upholstery and carpentry. They can also get training in computer technology, or construction. By working, our clients receive a compensation so they can buy their necessities here or send money home.
Furthermore, thanks to partnerships like this, our clients receive a second chance to get a job after they leave SDKK. It offers opportunities for our workers in the context of resocialization and to reduce the rate of recidivism.”
At FUSE Caribbean we aim for triple impact an the collaboration with SDKK helps us achieve our ambitions:
- Local plastic waste management as an alternative to landfilling or shipping.
- Sustainble earning potential, according to a circular economy model.
- Opportunities for employment and capacity building.
